Repairing
Use Asphalt Roofing shingle Top Complete to Quit Top Leaks
The hardest part of repairing a roof leak is to find the source of the leak, where and how the water is in its way!
The most common cause of roof leaks are transitional roof areas: chimney, skylights, vents, valleys and dormer areas. Often the flashing is not installed. Flashing is sheet metal installed at any point on an asphalt shingle transition to prevent leaks. If the flashing is not properly installed the asphalt shingle roof is vulnerable to leaks.
Another factor in the roof leaks in asphalt shingles is the pitch of the roof. Gravity is what keeps water rolling off the roof. If a roof has a low slope, there is more potential for the slow moving water to be blown under the asphalt shingles.
Repairing asphalt Shingle roof leaks
Once the source of the leak, repairing a leaky roof is really easy. If your roof is leaking due to a low slope, consider a shingle roof clear coating. If you have a hole in the flash, you can get a piece of metal flashing, and slide it over a hole above and below and above the pebble beach. If you are applying a roof coating to seal and can cover a larger area at once. As a preventive measure, the elastomeric coating can be applied to all areas of the asphalt shingle roof and transition to lower the risk of future leakage.
There are several roof coatings can be applied to a roof leak. Roof coatings are available in black or bright primary colors. I prefer using a clear asphalt shingle roof coating, thus eliminating unsightly black spots or incorrectly matched colors.
When selecting a roof coating, you should know how it is applied. Some coatings are applied with a trowel and others with a brush, applying with a brush makes the job easier. Another factor in applying a roof coating is the temperature, some roof coatings are not applied in cold weather! So check temperature limitations.
If you have problems with ice dams, you may want to clear asphalt shingle roof coating used around the roof edges where ice dams occur. This will prevent melting of snow and ice from being pushed or pooling on the roof shingles. It is much easier to prevent an ice dam leak than it is to leak fixed once an ice dam forms.
